Penguin Votive June 8, 2008

My husband and I love penguins. And really, what’s not to love? One Christmas I was making everyone candles and soaps as presents (we had just gotten married and moved across the country.) I made some personalized candle holders for the important people. This one turned out so cute, though, that I kept it for myself. The penguins are made from thin sheets or strands of translucent clay (depending on the part of the penguin.) I baked the votive holder, then I painted the penguins and the glass with thinned acrylic paint (there’s no clay on his belly, just paint.) I don’t know why I thought that was the best way to do it, but I was trying to go for “translucent.” It worked pretty well and it seems to be holding up fine.
